When you need a log splitter, you may not be able to settle on a particular machine because of all the options. Here's how to choose a log splitter.

If you're in the market for a new log splitter to break up logs into smaller firewood fragments, then you need to know what to look for in a good product. Learn how to choose the right log splitter by reflecting on the points we describe here.

  Consider log size

The first thing you should consider is the size of the log you plan to use the machine with. Separators come in different force capacities, which are measured in tons by manufacturers. If you know that your logs usually come from harder tree species and they are thicker in size, you will need to find a larger log splitter that can handle the job. Standard logs typically require a separator capable of producing about 20 tons of force.

  see specs

In addition to the power rating, you should also look at other specs to choose the log splitter that is right for you. On the one hand, the engine can indicate how powerful and reliable the log splitter is. When you see the 14.5-horsepower Kawasaki V-Twin electric-start engine and 120-volt electric motor on our splitters, you know they're up to the task. The wedges in contact with the wood also show the effectiveness of the log separator. Both of our log splitters have 1" machined steel composite wedges that won't break under pressure and provide a clean split in the wood.

  Consider transportability

Log separators need to be easy to transport so you can quickly move them wherever you need them. All of their major components are mounted on sturdy wheels so they can tumble over a variety of terrains. Plus, they feature trailer tongues, safety chains, and jack brackets that allow you to attach them to your truck's hitch. This makes our log splitter very flexible and suitable for a variety of environments.
